On Friday, October 16, 2026, the World Affairs Council of Atlanta convened its first Master Class of the 2027 Global Leadership Fellows Program on International Business at UPS Corporate Headquarters. Throughout the day, Fellows explored the forces reshaping global commerce—from shifting trade dynamics and geopolitical uncertainty to advanced manufacturing, workforce transformation, and international investment. Through expert instruction, industry perspectives, and interactive exercises, Fellows examined what it takes to lead across borders and identify opportunities in an increasingly interconnected global economy.

Cuneyt Evirgen, Senior Academic Professional, J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University, opened the Master Class with an exploration of the complexities of international business. Drawing on global developments and emerging risks, he challenged Fellows to consider how cultural differences, local contexts, and competing priorities influence business decisions—and why effective global leadership requires adaptability, cultural intelligence, and the ability to build trust across borders.

The panel discussion featuring Steven Ferguson, Deputy Director, Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute, Georgia Institute of Technology, explored how Georgia can remain competitive amid rapid technological change and global competition. The conversation examined the growing role of AI, automation, and advanced manufacturing alongside the challenges of workforce development and evolving skill demands. From expanding access to technical education and apprenticeships to strengthening collaboration between industry and academia, the discussion emphasized the importance of investing in people, fostering innovation, and building a resilient manufacturing ecosystem.

Cristina Falcone, Vice President, Corporate Affairs, UPS, led an interactive case study examining how UPS navigated the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. Fellows stepped into the role of business leaders, developing strategies to address evolving customs regulations, technology, transportation networks, and workforce considerations amid multiple possible outcomes. The exercise underscored the importance of scenario planning, adaptability, and clear communication with customers, employees, and stakeholders when navigating global disruption.

Stefan Harrigan, Senior Manager, Global Business Development, Metro Atlanta Chamber, explored how leaders can turn major international events into lasting economic opportunities. Drawing on examples of high-profile diplomatic visits and Atlanta's preparations to host the FIFA World Cup, he highlighted the power of strategic partnerships and relationship-building in strengthening the region's global connections. Fellows worked in groups to develop strategies for leveraging international events to attract investment, engage stakeholders, and create long-term value for Atlanta's business community.

The International Business Master Class reinforced a central lesson: navigating today's global economy requires more than understanding markets and emerging technologies. It demands adaptability, strategic foresight, and the ability to build trusted relationships across industries, cultures, and borders.

Special thanks to Cristina Falcone, Patrick Smith, and the team at UPS for their partnership, generous hospitality, and commitment to creating a meaningful learning experience for our Fellows. We are equally grateful to our speakers for sharing their expertise and perspectives, and to the World Affairs Council of Atlanta team—Rickey Bevington, Elena Fernandez, Jackie Davis, Erin Fox, Namit Nataraj, Tam Truong, Hannah Saxon, and Max Levy—for their work in bringing the day together.
