This article marks the fourth in a multi‑part series recapping each day of the 2026 Global Leadership Fellows’ recent International Immersion to Hamburg and Berlin, Germany. Launched in 2025, the Global Leadership Fellows Program is the flagship leadership development initiative of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta, designed to prepare early‑ to mid‑career professionals to lead with global perspective.
Wednesday began at the Joachim Herz Stiftung, where Fellows explored Germany's dual vocational education and apprenticeship system as a distinctive model for workforce development. The Hamburg-based foundation has dedicated itself to advancing education, science, and innovation — and through its Azubis USA initiative, has built a bridge between German and American workforce cultures, bringing apprentices across the Atlantic for training and exchange at Kennesaw State University. Alumni of the program joined the conversation, offering firsthand perspective on how cross-border exposure shapes globally minded professionals and how vocational pathways contribute to both economic competitiveness and social mobility.
At the Hamburg Port Authority, Fellows gained an on-the-ground understanding of one of Europe's most strategically vital ports. A guided harbor boat tour along the Elbe brought the scale of maritime logistics into vivid relief — container terminals, working waterfront, and the layered complexity of a port city in motion. Conversations with port leadership explored how Hamburg navigates the competing demands of global trade, urban development, sustainability, and infrastructure resilience. The visit reinforced a recurring theme of the week: that the systems underpinning global commerce are neither static nor simple.
The day closed at Miniatur Wunderland, a fitting final stop. The world's largest model exhibition recreates entire regions of the globe in remarkable detail — from Hamburg's own harbor to the Americas and beyond — making the complexity of transportation networks, cities, and landscapes visible all at once. A reminder that understanding how the world works often begins with stepping back to see the whole.
Through each visit, Fellows examined how workforce development, maritime infrastructure, and systems thinking underpin the institutions and economies that define modern global life.
This International Immersion was made possible with generous support from The Halle Foundation.
Save the date: The application cycle for the 2028 Global Leadership Fellows cohort will open on January 4, 2027.
