About the event
What does it mean to connect with nature in times of social and political upheaval? Kim Chong Hak, Painter of Seoraksan is a landmark exhibition introducing American audiences to one of Korea’s most prolific and expressive painters. Born in 1937, Kim lived through multiple conflicts and significant societal upheavals, including the Japanese colonization of Korea (1910–1945), the splitting of North and South Korea (1948), the Korean War (1950–1953), the turbulent democratic movements of the 1970s and 1980s, and ongoing tensions between the divided nations.
Join the World Affairs Council of Atlanta for an intimate study and tour of this limited exhibition at the High Museum of Art. Through Kim’s vivid depictions of Mt. Seorak, a beloved mountain that's renowned for its natural splendors and breathtaking views, participants will explore:
✅The history of a transformative political era in modern Korean history
✅How landscape painting can serve as a cultural and political resistance
✅The role of nature in healing, solitude, and reclaiming identity
✅Insights into Korean folk art and its influence on Kim’s work
Registration includes participation in an exclusive delegation of World Affairs Council of Atlanta members and guests, discounted museum entry, audio guide, and private invitation to Art in the Shadow of Upheaval: Korea’s Political Landscape in 1979-1980, a webinar delving into the intense political unrest and societal upheaval that shaped the creation of many works featured in the exhibition

Members of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta will find the discount registration code in the email newsletter.
